Crumb's 1 & Done Artist Proofs Christmas Sale

Over the years, Robert gave specially signed posters and some of his artist proofs to his close friend Carol Vinson. Now, both Carol and Robert have asked me to sell those prints and posters for her. I sold the first batch of her prints several years ago. And now we offer the second half of Carol's collection.

Monkey Wrench Gang Update: Inventory Issue Solved

Update:

After we sent out our newsletter yesterday morning which announced the release The Monkey Wrench Gang Edition, there was a technical problem with the company that handles our online shopping cart. After selling 12 Prints, the edition was listed as sold out. The problem has now been corrected and we are now able to process the orders.

Below is the the updated listing with a new link for ordering.

Celebrating the 10th anniversary release of Edward Abbey's book The Monkey Wrench Gang, book publisher Ken Sanders released a new version of the book. The new version, released in 1985, was illustrated by Robert Crumb. In an effort to promote the book, Sanders paired Abbey and Crumb together for several book signing appearances. You can see a clip of this period on YouTube. The book proved to be Abbey's best known work and sold over a million copies. Abbey died in 1989 at the age of 62 from complications after a surgical procedure.

Crumb's original cover artwork was long gone, so the only way to reproduce the image was to scan the book cover, blow it up in Photoshop, and clean up each and every line–on both sides. I've been in this position before. It took me three weeks to restore the black line. I then color-separated it to match the book cover, with a few changes per Crumb's instruction.Wildwood Serigraphs is pleased to announce the release of our 31st Robert Crumb serigraph edition with The Monkey Wrench Gang. It's an 80 piece serigraph edition on white Rives BFK 280 gram archival paper. It took 22 colors to recreate the book cover. The paper, with two deckle edges, is 18.5" x 28". The image is 13.5" x 20". Each print comes with a certificate of authenticity written by Crumb. It also comes with our unconditional guarantee for your complete satisfaction or your money back. There are NO customized signatures in this edition.

Additional Note:
I would like to bring attention to the fact that Crumb has mastered many different genres of illustration. He's mastered the art of cartooning, the art of calligraphy, the art of caricature, the art of of realistic portraiture, the art of editorial cartooning–all with the immediate recognition of his own style. With The Monkey Wrench Gang, Crumb gives us another graphic style he's mastered: the art of pulp fiction. The graphic rendition of a dramatic, climactic scene with sweeping, bright type that lures the customer to the magazine (or, in this case, book) like fish to bait. I don't know if there's another American artist before–or if there will ever be one after–Crumb who has mastered so many different genres of illustrating. And all of this is completely separate from his ability as a writer. It's truly a privilege to work with such an exceptional and unique American artist.

Blind Arvella Gray Limited Edition Etching

Each year I go through all of Crumb's work looking for images to print as etching editions. Once I get some prospective pieces together, I call him up and we discuss which images we should publish. But this year is the first year that Robert called me and told me he had an image he wanted us to publish as an etching edition. A friend of Robert's had given him a photograph of a blues musician playing on Maxwell Street (Chicago) in the mid-60's. It inspired Robert to do an ink drawing of the photograph. Crumb was so pleased with the way it turned out, he suggested it as the next etching edition.

So we're both very pleased to present the latest Crumb etching edition of 40 prints. It's of the blues busker Blind Arvella Gray. I don't think he was a well-known or famous blues player, although if you Google him some clips do appear. Rather, it's the image itself, and how well Crumb has captured a sunny day in America in the mid-60's.

There are 40 prints in the edition, with an additional 8 Artist's proofs and 3 printer proofs. The paper size is 12" x 13". The embossed area is 8.75" x 8.25". The image size is 8" x 7". None of the prints were customized with a special Crumb nick-name. Each print comes with our guarantee for your complete satisfaction. Release date is Tuesday, September 19th, 2017.

An interesting side note: the store in the background (Radio-TV-Records Mart) had a backroom where Muddy Waters, Little Walter and Jimmy Young all recorded their first demos in Chicago. This according to a web page dedicated to the memory of the store owner, Bernard Abrams.

Robert Johnson 'Hell Hound On My Trail' Limited Edition Giclée

RCrumb.com is pleased to announce the release of R. Crumb’s portrait of Robert Johnson entitled Hell Hound On My Trail as a limited giclée unsigned edition. The release date is Tuesday, June 27th. The history of this image is a bit complicated and I’ll try and give as brief background to its evolution as I can.

In the late 1980’s, Crumb created a portrait of Robert Johnson for the cover of the 78 Quarterly magazine (1990, Volume 4). In the mid-90’s, Jesse Crumb requested his father alter the portrait so it could be used as the next serigraph edition. When Robert complied, he sent his color guide along with the artwork to Wildwood Serigraphs, where both Jesse and I made changes to his original color scheme. We created 220 prints for the signed serigraph edition. But Crumb was not entirely happy with the color changes that were made.

In 2003, Robert Crumb and I were sued by Steve LeVere (Delta Haze Corporation) for infringements on the photograph of Robert Johnson, to which Delta Haze has the rights. Regardless of the fact that Crumb had a strong case for fair use, Robert chose not to litigate because the costs were essentially prohibitive. So Crumb and I settled with LeVere and an ensuing unsigned serigraph edition was created and sold as part of that settlement. But afterwards, Robert and I pledged never to have anything to do with the Robert Johnson image again–we didn’t want Steve LeVere to profit in any way from Robert’s artwork.

In 2015, Steve LeVere passed away and left his portion of the Robert Johnson estate to his children. After hearing the news, Robert and I discussed the possibility of finally releasing the Robert Johnson edition as Crumb originally intended it to be. He revised his color rough and sent it to me. I carried out his instructions dutifully and now, finally, he’s pleased with his Robert Johnson Hell Hounds On My Trail edition. This giclée edition is printed with archival Epson Ultrachrome inks on Somerset archival paper. The paper is 18 x 24 inches. The image is 14 x 19 inches. The edition sells for $90, the extra ten dollars being collected for royalties due the Delta Haze Corporation. There are 300 prints in the edition, and each one comes with your complete satisfaction or your money back.

TRUMPO THE CLOWN

2XL   $23

WOMEN WHO VOTE FOR TRUMP

Sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words. ’Nuff said. Screen printed directly onto a cream color t-shirt, which is slightly lighter than the “natural cream” colored shirts used for the Trumpo design.

Small • Medium • Large • X-Large   $20

2XL   $23

CARING NATURALLY

For those of you who can’t bear to listen or watch the day to day fiasco of Trump’s administration, here’s a shirt for you. Mr. Natural persevering patiently, nurturing the “Caring Tree,” dedicated to progressive principles in his own quiet and loving way. We would like to add that Crumb did this illustration in 1983. He also did a comic strip lambasting Trump way back in 1989 (called Point the Finger, found in the comic book Hup #3, available on this site). He's always been ahead of his time. Screen printed in four color process on the natural cream Canvas t-shirt.

Art & Beauty Magazine #3

Published in 2016, Crumb's latest is a full 44 page comic book of illustrations inspired by the beautiful female form. Crumb's writing is a satirical tribute to the old photography magazines of the '30's and '40's. These "art" magazines were filled with photos of scantily dressed or sometimes nude models to titillate the prurient nature of the buyer, while the copy was laden with heavy-handed artistic insights, written to appease the strict censorship of that era.
